Mendipathar situated in East Garo Hills District which is about 70 Km from the District Headquarter Williamnagar. The people in this region are mostly poor and their occupation is agriculture. Besides farming they also engaged in rubber plantation. Prior to the existence of this cooperative society the products of these small farmers were exploited by the traders. Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society was registered un the Meghalaya Cooperative Societies Act in December 1998 with its registration No. W-2/98-99. At the initial stage the Cooperative Society started its activity with a temporary loan of Rs. 5,000. With this capital and financial help from the Rubber Board they began to procure rubber sheets from the farmers at the rate of Rs.35/- per kg. where as the prevailing market rate was Rs.10/- per kg. When the news of this high rate offered by the Cooperative Society spreads more farmers came to sell their products to the Cooperative Society. From that time onwards the Society starts progressing to a higher standard which caters to the needs of the farmers. The position of the Society is as follows  :-

The Society has its own godown with a capacity of 400 mt., another building for retail outlet in a style of a departmental store, and a separate shed for imparting training and other demonstration camps for the welfare of the members. The business Turnover of the society during the year 2002-03 was 1.61 crores.

From amongst the other societies this is one of the best in Meghalaya and can be considered as a model Cooperative Society which generates the economic upliftment of the poor local farmers. As of now they have improved a lot. At the same time, it can be consider as a model Cooperative Society in Meghalaya.
